Time Strategies

Image
For this assignment, I read  How To Beat Procrastination  by Caroline Webb and  How Checklists Train Your Brain To Be More Productive and Goal-Oriented  by Lauren Marchese. These articles had some good tips. I tend to have checklists for everything, because I have noticed that I feel a sense of accomplishment when I get to check something off of that list. I also struggle with procrastination. One thing that helps me is sitting down to do something for two minutes. After that two minutes are up, I rarely ever want to stop doing whatever the task was. I realize that it was not as big or as bad as I was building it up to be in my head, and I can usually make good progress on it.                                                                        Procrastination

Technology

Image
I have never run a blog for a class before--or ever, really--so I am excited about the technical aspect of posting thoughts every day. I feel like the common conceptions about blogs come from movies and/or tv shows, so I am excited to know how my experience stacks up. This feels similar to discussion posts, but also completely different. I already had spellcheck on my browser, so that was not difficult. I also already know how to bookmark things. I am interested to get more comfortable with this class in general and this blog specifically.                                                                   Technology Picture

Thoughts on Assignments

Image
I am most intrigued by the assignments involving rewriting the myths. I think those are going to be really fun, and the most interesting to comment on. Everyone is going to go in a different direction, even though we will all start with the same myth. I have not ever taken a class like this before. I think I am going to enjoy it. I like that the grading system is not traditional, as that takes off some of the stress. For the extra credit options, the microfiction one seems like it would be fun. I think I would also enjoy the Wikipedia trail option though.                                                                           Wikipedia Logo

My Ideas About Growth Mindset

Image
I have never heard of Carol Dweck’s method of Not Yet teaching. However, I think it could be really useful, especially to children who have been told they are dumb because they are not doing as well as other students around them. That leads to children giving up and not trying anymore, because what’s the point if you already know what’s going to happen? My parents, especially my mother, have always encouraged problem-solving. I think that ties into Not Yet. If you fail at something, what can you do now to be better prepared to take it again? I did taekwondo for over a decade. I started when I was five and I stopped when I got my black belt. I remember learning the first form. It’s the simplest one, and everyone around me, including my twin brother, had gotten it already. I had gotten to the point where I was upset every time I was asked to do the form, because I already knew I would not get it right, and that would lead to embarrassment in front of the rest of the class. Introduction to a WGS Major

Image
Hello everyone! My major is Women’s and Gender Studies. I am aiming to graduate this summer (knock on wood). The best class I took last semester was called Contemporary Feminist Thought because it was really interesting, and it changed the way I thought about a lot of things. I would say my biggest accomplishment last semester was getting an A in my Contemporary Feminist Thought course! There was so much writing involved. There was a reading response on two readings due every week, and at least three big papers, plus discussion posts! And of course, I think keeping my head above water last semester is an accomplishment given all the craziness that was going on. Kudos to all of us! I am living at home with my parents and my brothers. We have three dogs. Shadow, Seph, which is short for Persephone, and Echo, who is my dog. Echo is kind of an oaf. He loves to jump onto my ribs when I am not expecting it. Given that he weighs upwards of eighty pounds, this is not exactly the most fun thing

Storybook Favorites

I chose the three stories discussed in this post because their titles intrigued me. The first,  Goddess of the Rising Sun: Amaterasu , is from Japanese mythology. This story was completely new to me, as most of the mythology I know is Greek, Roman, Egyptian, or Norse. This myth also interested me because in most mythologies, the sun is masculine and the moon is feminine. In Japanese mythology, the sun is a Goddess and the moon is a God. This storybook was very well written, and it drew me in and made me want to know more about Amaterasu and her brothers, Tsukuyomi and Susanoo. Tsukuyomi is the moon God, who was banished for an unforgivable crime, which is why it will never be day and night at the same time. Susanoo was banished to the underworld, Yomi.                                                       Amaterasu Emerging From the Cave The second story,  The Lost Tales of the Avatar , tells the story of Wan Shi Tong, he-who-knows-ten-thousand-things, and Koh, the face stealer. My Favorite Place

My mother had to go to New Orleans to present at a conference. I went with her, and I fell in love with the city. Music was everywhere, and there were so many interesting shops. Although I do not see myself living there on account of how many people there were, I do look forward to going back.                                                    New Orleans Sign                                           Band Performing for Mardi Gras                                                        French Quarter
