Introduction to a WGS Major

Hello everyone!

My major is Women’s and Gender Studies. I am aiming to graduate this summer (knock on wood). The best class I took last semester was called Contemporary Feminist Thought because it was really interesting, and it changed the way I thought about a lot of things. I would say my biggest accomplishment last semester was getting an A in my Contemporary Feminist Thought course! There was so much writing involved. There was a reading response on two readings due every week, and at least three big papers, plus discussion posts! And of course, I think keeping my head above water last semester is an accomplishment given all the craziness that was going on. Kudos to all of us!

I am living at home with my parents and my brothers. We have three dogs. Shadow, Seph, which is short for Persephone, and Echo, who is my dog. Echo is kind of an oaf. He loves to jump onto my ribs when I am not expecting it. Given that he weighs upwards of eighty pounds, this is not exactly the most fun thing for me. He is also very smart and has figured out how to open the door to the cabinet where their bones are kept. Shadow and Seph are both black labs, but we do not know what Echo is. I got him from a shelter, so unless I shell out for one of those dog DNA tests, there’s really no way of knowing for sure. My mom is convinced he has Staffordshire terrier in him, but I think there’s at least a little Great Dane in him. Shadow is ten years old and is very much a grumpy old man. Seph and Echo get along really well, which I am thankful for because they tire each other out.

                                                         Echo and Seph Being Adorable

My least favorite food is probably raw spinach. I can stomach almost anything else, but spinach has to be cooked. I have been trying to eat healthier lately, but I just cannot do spinach salads, even smothered in ranch (when negates the healthiness a little bit!). My favorite food is probably any kind of chocolate dessert, as long as it does not have nuts or taste overwhelmingly of peanut butter. I have the biggest sweet tooth in my family, and my brothers often make fun of me for the way I drink my coffee.

Hoping this semester goes well,

Cady

  1. Hi, Cady. What made you interested in your major? What do you hope to do with it after college? I like your dogs. That's nice that they all have someone to play with. My family always had one dog at a time, but a couple years ago we got two dogs at the same time. Their experience seems a lot more fun than the previous dogs we've owned.

  2. Hello, Cady. I am also interested in what made you want to be Women's and Gender Studies major. I love your puppies (all dogs are puppies no matter what). I really want a dog but I am waiting until I get a place that would allow them to run around and not be cooped up. I am the opposite of you I like raw spinach but hate when it is cooked. I just like to eat it with ranch along with carrots. What made you want to take this class?

I hope you have a great semester!

  3. Hey Cady!

Good job on that A! I'm sure from how you are talking about it that the class you took was not an easy class, so good job on that A!! Echo and Seph in the picture are very cute! I have three dogs of my own although they are a lot smaller. I have two dachshunds and a mini goldendoodle! You had said Echo came from a shelter, which is so awesome! We rescued one of my dachshunds from a shelter, so I can relate to you on that note! I also can relate to you on the chocolate craving! I love pretty much anything with chocolate. It's a dangerous liking haha. Hope you have a great semester!!

  4. Hiya Cady!
Like Landon said, well done on getting through last semester especially getting an A in what sounds like a tough course! I'm sure it was a lot of hard work, but it paid off, which is always a good feeling, especially amidst hard times like the pandemic.
I'm a philosophy major, and one of my friends says that the way WGS & Philosophy help students cultivate critical thinking skills is really similar - I'd love to know what you think about that. Also, I'm sure being familiar with Feminist Theory will provide a really interesting perspective on some of the stories you'll be reading for this course!
On a couple of final notes, I think it's really sweet (ha! get it?) how you included that detail of your brothers picking on you for how you drink coffee - it's such a minor detail, but says a lot, and it's always funny to think about how coffee is one of those things that really reveals different tastes. PLUS, your dogs are really cute!!!

  5. Great intro Cady! Hey we're in the same boat as far as tentative graduation date goes lol. I've always been curious about WGS courses and what all they entail. Some of the lower division non-major courses I browsed when looking for electives seemed very intriguing, but the classes filled up FAST. Love the pups! Have a good semester!

  6. Hello!

Its nice to meet you and congratulations on your upcoming graduation! I love the picture of your dogs. I have also heard good things about contemporary feminism and may it this fall! I hate raw spinach as well. Ewwwww. I need my food cooked as well I feel that is also the reason I cannot eat sushi

  7. Oh, I am so glad to see a WGS major in this class, Cady: fantastic! That is such a wonderful program at OU, and with so much overlap in this class... like the kind of project you are doing with your Storybook! That's perfect! There is this whole worldwide project going on right now to reclaim the old stories and tell them in new ways with women's voices, asking questions and looking for themes that got pushed aside before, and WGS is where you can learn how to do all that, moving us forward into the future.
And what great classical names for the doggos! Now you just need a Cerberus to guard the door to Persephone's underworld palace! A neighbor of mine long ago had a Boxer who was a really big dog; I don't know if he weighed 80 pounds, but close to it anyway, all muscle, and his favorite thing to do was to stand up, put his paws on your shoulders, and stare you right in the face. You could tell if he had wanted to knock you down, he could do it, easy, but he just wanted to stand there and stare. He was a great dog, but definitely more dog than I would have been able to handle, ha ha. I'm more of a cat person when it comes to pets, but I love getting to meet other people's dogs, so I am very grateful to neighbors-with-dogs. :-)

  8. Hi Cady! I have a friend who is a WGS major and she really seems to love it, I hope you feel the same! Always been interested in it but my major does not overlap with it at all, haha.

I am also an animal lover, and your dogs are absolutely adorable! When I was younger I had a black lab and a yellow lab, they're great dogs. I also agree with you about cooking spinach! It's a must. But once sautéed, you can't beat it!

  9. Hi Cady!
Women and Gender Studies is not a common major I come across when I meet someone new, so it's cool to me to be able to know someone in the program! I took a WGS class over the summer (Women Creating Social Change) that absolutely kicked my booty, but was one of the most informational classes I've taken at OU, and I really enjoyed it! Congratulations on your upcoming graduation, I wish you the best of luck!

  10. Hey Cady! Women and Gender studies sound so interesting! I am a social work major and loved it when I got to take a women's history course and honestly thought about getting a minor in women's and gender's studies or something. But with everything going on the last two years, I'm just trying to finish out this last semester. Which as you were also saying about being super busy, I can totally relate too. The picture of your dogs is super cute! I don't have any animals right now unfortunately, because I am too busy to take care of one. But maybe since I'm graduating soon, I can look into it. I also admire that you wanna eat healthier. I wish I had the will-power to do that. I do like raw spinach though. It's lettuce I can't stand. I think ti has something to do with the texture. But in general I don't eat raw veggies at all. Spinach is the only one I will eat raw and it has to be on or in something. So I feel your pain. Anyway, good luck for the rest of the semester! and for summer! Can't wait to see your work here in this class!

  11. Hey Cady!
Great call with saying chocolate dessert as your favorite food, its really hard to go wrong with any dessert as I have a big sweet tooth as well! Thank you for sharing your dogs with us, one of my favorite parts of reading intros is getting to see peoples' pets, and I already love Seph and Echo. Best of luck this semester and with graduating on time!

  12. Howdy Cady!
First off, congratulations on that A. I've taken some courses in my anthropology major with similar workloads and I can definitely relate to how not fun that is, especially with everything about last semester (and the last half of the one before it). Unrelated, if you're willing to try raw spinach one last time, might I suggest a balsamic vinaigrette, feta cheese, and walnuts. It's the only way to do it in my opinion. Last but not least, I love your dogs! Echo and Seph are adorable! (have you ever heard the song "Persephone" by Sidney Gish?) Anyway, I wish you the best of luck on that summer graduation, and hope you have a great rest of your semester!

  13. Hello Cady!
I'm glad you got an A in what sounds like a very tough and demanding course. I a lot of times struggle with writing, both content and grammatically haha. Your dogs are very cute, and I'm sure you love your dogs as much as I do mine! I have one pure bread dachshund and one terrier dachshund mix. They have the same age dynamic as Echo and Shadow, Ollie the younger one loves to antagonize Rosco.

  14. Hi Cady, nice to meet you! I've always thought the WGS major sounds really interesting. I'm doing Letters, and some of my classes have discussed topics relating to gender which I always think is really interesting. Your dogs are so cute! I wish I could have three, but in my apartment we just have room for a cat (we used to have a hamster but he recently got evicted :/). I have a huge sweet tooth also, but for some reason I like my coffee black.

  15. Hey Cady,
Nice to finally meet you so late in the semester. Looking back we did have a pretty hectic semester, luckily we made it though it. Echo looks like a huge dog I would not be surprised if he had a little bit of great dane in him as well. That's a really cute picture by the way your lab looks a lot like my neighbors. Good luck with graduation and everything, hope you have a great rest of your semester!

  16. Hi Cady! What a cool major you've chosen! And congrats on your A! It's always so nice when your hard work pays off in the end. I like that you said that about raw spinach. I am the exact same way. I LOVE spinach when cooked, but for some reason it just has an awful texture and taste when it's just raw leaves.

  17. Hi Cady,
Your dogs look cute. I agree that Echo looks to be part great dane or something. I saw Seph is named after the goddess Persephone, is Echo named after the mountain nymph Echo? I also had a lab named Shadow when I was little. I have never liked spinach either, it is so annoying that so many salads have it in their salad mix.
